Many people assume that holding a residency permit in Albania allows free movement across Europe. This is not the case. An Albanian residency permit gives you legal status inside Albania only. It does not allow entry into Schengen countries unless your passport already qualifies for visa-free access.
Residency Is Not a Travel Visa
Residency permits and travel visas serve two very different purposes. A residency permit is issued by Albania to allow you to live in the country legally. It does not function as a visa or entry document for other countries.

However, the same visa rules apply — your documents, income, travel plans, and previous visa history will all be reviewed. Holding an Albanian permit does not guarantee visa approval.
Important Distinction from EU Residency
Unlike residency permits issued by EU or Schengen countries, Albanian residency does not come with any mobility benefits across European borders. Albania is not a member of the European Union or the Schengen zone.
This means that even long-term residents in Albania must follow standard visa procedures when traveling to nearby countries.
