Foreigners interested in doing business in Albania often confuse two completely different processes: getting a business visa and registering a company. While both are part of building a business presence in the country, they serve different legal purposes and follow separate procedures. Understanding the difference is essential for staying compliant and choosing the right entry point into the Albanian market.
What is a business visa?
A business visa is a short-term entry authorization that allows foreign nationals to visit Albania for business-related activities. This includes meetings, negotiations, attending events, or preparing for future investments. It does not give you permission to live in Albania long term or to operate a business locally.
The business visa is limited by time, usually valid for 90 days within a 180-day period. It is only suitable for those who are visiting temporarily to explore opportunities or manage non-operational matters. You cannot sign contracts as a local company or start trading while on a business visa.
What is company registration?
Company registration is the legal process of creating a business entity in Albania. It gives you the right to operate commercially, open bank accounts, hire employees, and engage in local and international trade. Registered companies are fully recognized under Albanian law and must comply with tax and regulatory obligations.
Once you register a company—such as a limited liability company (SHPK) or a joint stock company (SHA)—you can apply for a residency permit as the company’s administrator or owner. This allows you to live in Albania legally while managing your business.
Can you register a company with just a visa?
Yes, you can visit Albania on a business visa to start the registration process, but to actively run and manage the business, you will need to obtain a legal residency permit based on your company role. The visa gives you access to start, but it does not replace the need for legal stay if you plan to live or work in the country long term.
The business visa is a travel tool. Company registration is a legal foundation. They are connected—but serve very different roles in setting up a presence in Albania. Knowing the difference helps you plan your entry correctly and avoid legal confusion later on.
