Tirana, April 2025 — Albania has lowered the income threshold requiring individuals to file annual tax declarations, marking a notable change in the country’s tax compliance rules for 2025.
Under the new regulation, individuals with a gross annual income exceeding 1.2 million Albanian lek (approximately €11,400) are now required to submit an income declaration to the tax authorities. This represents a reduction from the previous threshold of 2 million lek.
The deadline for submitting the 2024 income declaration is set for March 31, 2025. Failure to file on time will result in a fixed penalty of 3,000 lek (around €29).
The reform aims to broaden the tax base and improve transparency, encouraging more taxpayers to report their income while aligning Albania’s practices with international tax reporting standards.
Tax professionals emphasize the importance of accurate reporting, noting that individuals with income from multiple sources—including salaries, dividends, rental income, and freelance activities—must ensure full compliance to avoid penalties.
This change is part of Albania’s ongoing efforts to modernize its tax system and enhance revenue collection as the country moves closer to European Union integration.
